Choosing the Best Under Bed Storage System
by Veronica Smith from AmericanArtisanArt.com
Instead of wasting the space under your bed, a better plan is to purchase an under bed storage system, so that you can utilize the space wisely. However, it can be sometimes be difficult to decide which type of storage system would work best for your individual needs. There are many different styles of storage boxes and storage systems that are designed specifically for use under a bed, in addition to other types of boxes and storage units that aren't specifically for under bed use, but which work well nonetheless.
Deciding What You Want to Store
One of the main factors to consider when choosing an under bed storage system is the type of things you wish to store. For example, some people like to use this space to store off-season clothing, or extra pairs of shoes. If you plan to use the items you store under the bed on a fairly regular basis, it can be helpful to choose storage boxes that can roll out easily on casters or wheels.
If you are storing clothing or other items that you wish to keep clean, choosing plastic bins with tightly fitting lids would be the best approach. There are also under bed storage systems that zip closed, as a garment bag does, which are a good choice when you wish to keep clothing stored in a clean and airtight fashion.
Some people prefer to use the area to store items such as magazines or photographs. If this is the case, you can often find storage boxes that are specially designed and sized for these items. If you wish to use the storage space for items such as craft supplies, selecting boxes that are designed to hold sewing materials, scrapbook paper, or other types of supplies can be the best approach.
Clear plastic shoe boxes are also ideal for storing items under the bed, especially in the case of smaller items that you plan to use on a regular basis. There are also containers designed to hold items such as wrapping paper which allow you to store unwieldy rolls of paper in a neat and convenient fashion.
In a child's room, the under bed area can be ideal for storing toys, especially those which are large or which are played with on the floor, like a race track set or box of blocks.
Choosing a Bed that Includes Built-In Under Bed Storage
In addition to separate under the bed storage systems, there are also beds which are specifically designed to utilize the under bed area. These beds are normally designed as a platform bed, and include one or more rows of drawers on either side of the bed. These can be especially convenient, since the drawers work as easily as drawers in any other piece of furniture. Platform beds are often especially popular for children's rooms, because not only do they provide a lot of space for storing toys, but they are easy for a child to access, which can eliminate the need for an additional piece of furniture to store clothing.
